Duke of Edinburgh International Award
Scholars International School is proud to deliver the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.
What is the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award?
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading youth achievement award aimed at all 14 to 24-year olds. The award equips young people for life regardless of their background, culture, physical ability, skills, and interests. Participating in the award is a personal challenge and not a competition against others; it pushes young people to their personal limits and recognises their achievements. The award was founded in 1956 by His Royal Highness,The Duke of Edinburgh (husband to Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom), and over eight million young people have participated in it in over 140 countries and territories. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award offers young learners the opportunity to develop into independent, caring, risk-taking and responsible well-rounded adults. The award comprises of four sections and is more than just “a camping trip with friends”, it is about developing skills and attributes that will be needed throughout their lives.
To find out more about the award and what is involved please visit the website. For many students the adventurous journey will be what they look forward to most, where they learn camping skills, first aid, cooking skills, amongst many other things and co-operate in groups to navigate unfamiliar terrain and expand their horizons. These journeys are both rewarding and challenging and are always an experience fondly remembered by our students. Along with the adventurous journey students will also have to complete a service activity, refine or learn a skill and be involved in some sort of physical activity. This award takes a lot of commitment and determination to complete. They will identify SMART targets for each aspect that they have chosen and will record their progress in achieving these online, providing evidence and expressing what they have learned and achieved along the way. As well as partaking in the physical, skill and service aspects of the programme students put their navigation skills to the test on two adventurous journeys.
The first of these is a practice journey where students put into practice the skills, such as navigation, that they have learnt in the classroom the second is an assessed journey which tests their competence and self-sufficiency whilst demonstrating these same skills. For the bronze adventurous journey the group head into the UAE desert where they trek along a route pre-planned by themselves, stopping at checkpoints along the way. After carrying their belongings and survival resources with them, they reach their midway point, pitch their tents, cook their own meal on a camping stove and settle down for the night under the stars. The silver journey consists of three days and two nights demonstrating a more advanced skill set that students are trained for. The impact that this award has on the student’s lives is undeniable and the attitude and attributes fostered through their participation is unquestionable. This Award provides you with lifelong skills and experiences that are consistently recognized by employers and educational institutions from all around the world.
