Physical Education

The vision of Physical Education at Scholars International Academy is to begin the physical literacy journey of all our students. We deliver learning experiences that provide students with opportunities to succeed in sport and understand the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle. Our teaching philosophy is based upon the ‘Four Pillars of PE’ – skill, teamwork, leadership and effort; we believe these are the fundamental qualities required to excel in sport and physical activity and all students strive to demonstrate and improve within these areas during every lesson.

We deliver a vast curriculum from years 1-13 covering a variety of sports including athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, handball, health related fitness, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, swimming, softball and volleyball. This year we are proud to add a dance specialist to our PE department and offer dance to all our students. We believe that students learn best through active engagement and therefore focus on increasing the physical learning aspect of each lesson.

To fulfil our vision we encourage students to follow career pathways into sport and physical activity. Our GCSE PE cohort grows bigger and stronger each year and our staff endeavor to secure the highest possible grade for each student. We focus on each student as an individual using assessment data to formulate individual intervention and close any gaps in theoretical knowledge. As well as enabling improvement in a host of sports delivered on site we ensure every possible outcome is explored and actively secure externally provided sporting opportunities, such as rock climbing, to secure the highest possible grade in the practically assessed component.

We are delighted to announce that BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport has now been added to our curriculum and completes our vision delivering students from their first sporting experiences into a life-long physical activity. The course looks at the multi-faceted approach to sports preparation and performance, whilst preparing students for a career in high performance sport. Numerous different career pathways are opened through BTEC Sport leading students onto university programmes to study sports coaching, sports development, sport education or sport and exercise sciences or directly into employment in this field.

Our PE department has a strong commitment towards extracurricular sport and deliver sessions before school, during break times and after school. The activities programme offered after school every Monday and Wednesday is extensive and involves ex-professional footballers, karate specialists and golf coaches. As well as participating in regular sporting fixtures against local schools we regularly compete in tournaments and this year we will have teams representing our school at the BSME Sport and BSME Dance competitions. We are excited to announce that the Duke of Edinburgh award has begun and that our first cohort of students recently completed their first expedition. Sports trips are regularly offered and our entire year 12 and 13 cohort recently completed the Outward Bound course.
